Course Description

Where does art live outside museums—and why does it matter?

In Public Art & Civic Voice, students aged 11–17 will discover how art shapes our neighborhoods, sparks conversations, and gives communities a visual voice. Over eight weeks, we'll walk through Frederick's streets, examine murals and monuments, learn about art as protest and celebration, and create our own work inspired by what we find.

This isn't your typical art class. Every session blends observation, discussion, and hands-on creation—with plenty of time outdoors exploring the city itself as our studio. Students won't just learn about public art; they'll experience firsthand how creative expression intersects with civic life.

What Students Will Leave With

By the end of eight weeks, participants will have:

• 🔍 Documented Frederick's public art landscape through their own lens

• 🎨 Created multiple finished pieces including mural proposals, sculptural maquettes, and protest-inspired works

• 📝 Developed critical vocabulary for discussing art and power

• ✊ Crafted a personal action plan for staying engaged with civic art moving forward
